The Og
Mandino Story
The Og Mandino story starts with
the gift of a son to Silvio and Margaret Mandino on December 12
1923.
The boy was named Augustine after his
paternal Italian grandfather Augustine Mandino but the
attenuation to Og happened quite early and has stuck with him
ever since.
Og Mandino first became famous
for his innovative book The Greatest Salesman in the World
published in 1968 although the Og Mandino Story to that point
had been one of frustration, degradation and finally a triumph
over the odds stacked high against him.
Like many returning servicemen before
him Bombardier Augustine “Og” Mandino discovered that his
ordinary high school education was not enough to keep the wolf
from the door and his 30 B34 bombing missions over Nazi Germany
counted for little in a post-war job market. Eventually, after
months of unemployment Og Mandino finally landed a job as an
insurance salesman and the next chapters in the Og Mandino
Story began to unfold.
By this time Og Mandino had married
his pre-war girlfriend but the joys of marriage soon faded as
they drifted deep into debt and even the arrival of a lovely
baby daughter was not enough to sustain the marriage. The next
two years were the hardest of Og Mandino’s life as he battled
to stay afloat and eventually surrendered and became a
motorized hobo moving from town to town picking up what menial
work he could.
